Breakfast sandwich from Sandwich Shop in downtown LA.

Egg, cheese, and bacon on ciabatta. The interesting part is that it’s typically served “with vegetables,” which means grilled onions and peppers, jalapeños, and tomato. It’s very tasty and makes me wonder why I don’t see more jalapeños at breakfast.

I’ve been making my own version of this sandwich the last couple weekends and I’ve been really happy with it.

The peppers and onions take awhile to cook, but it’s worth it.

My one regret is that I didn’t get a chance to try out the Bulgogi Cheesesteak at the Sandwich Shop… Next trip.

Cole’s Sandwiches in downtown LA.

Cole’s sandwiches claims to be the originator of the French Dip sandwich. Of course, so does Philippe’s.

Either way, it’s worth a stop. The sign says “since 1908” and the bar inside looks pretty authentic. It’s got a great feel. There’s a great draught beer list.

The menu is simple: french dip sandwiches, with your choice of meat. They’re served with some ridiculously spicy mustard and an equally spicy pickle that’s been pickled alongside some jalapenos. There’s something about the spiciness that goes really well with a meaty/bready sandwich. It just works.

I went here for lunch twice while I was in downtown LA. I ate at the bar: beef one day, and pastrami the next.

I can’t recommend this place enough. The sandwiches are good, the beers are good, and the place itself has a great feel.

I recently took a laser cutter class at the new techshop in sf.

A few weeks later I booked some time on the machine and made a bunch of random things including these retro 8-bit space invader type characters. They’re based on this design from thingaverse. They’ve just been sitting around on my desk, but today I finally decided to do something with them. I had some magnetic tape lying around and thought they would make great magnets.

I don’t think I ever linked to any of these photos, but Melissa and I took a trip out to the computer history museum last year.

I’m bringing it up because Time has a photo-essay up showcasing photos from Core Memory. I really love looking at photos of old computers. I pre-ordered that book a couple of years ago as soon as I could.

Mine did not turn out quite as nice as the book, but I think there are a couple of interesting ones. I’m really glad we took the trip when we did, I think they’re changing quite a bit, and don’t think they are planning to keep all of these computers out in the open.

We went out to the Winchester House a few weekends ago. I had just finished reading All the Way Home, a book about restoring an old mansion in Akron, Ohio. So, when I heard about this house with 160 rooms, 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 47 stairways, 47 fireplaces, 13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens, I had to check it out. It was designed and built by Sarah Winchester, with non-stop construction for 38 years. The backstory is really interesting and definitely worth checking out. Unfortunately, the place is run less like a historical museum and more like an amusement park. Also, they don’t allow any pictures in the house, so I only got a few shots in around the house.
